Forest legend Thomson passes away

Nottingham Forest

Charlie Thomson, the goalkeeper in Nottingham Forest's FA Cup-winning side of 1959, has died at the age of 78.

'Chic' Thomson, who also played for Chelsea, made more than 120 appearances for the club between 1957 and 1961.

Forest chief executive Mark Arthur said: "We were deeply saddened to learn of his death and extend our deepest condolences to his family.

"Chic's name is etched firmly in the folklore of this club and supporters of all ages will mourn his passing."

Thomson, who passed away on Tuesday after being taken ill, helped the Reds beat Luton to win the Cup and continued to live in Nottingham after his retirement from the game.

He was born in Perth, Scotland in 1930 and began his professional career at Clyde.

He was bought by Chelsea for 5,000 in October 1952 and helped them win their first league title in 1955.
