Nottingham Forest say they cannot afford to make a summer move for Manchester City striker Darren Huckerby.
Huckerby was unable to guide Forest into the Premiership
The pacy 27-year-old frontman spent the final three months of last season on loan at the City Ground.
He scored five goals in nine games to help them into the play-offs, but drew a blank as Forest lost out to Sheffield United in the semi-finals.
And Forest's failure to reach the Premiership means a move for Huckerby is beyond them.
The club's chief executive Mark Arthur said: "Darren joined us on loan with a view to a permanent move if we won promotion.
"Unfortunately, as we will be playing First Division football again next season we cannot contemplate making Darren a permanent signing."
