Norwich City's Chris Martin delighted with win

Two-goal Norwich City striker Chris Martin says Saturday's 5-0 victory over Colchester United has buried memories of their 7-1 defeat on the opening day.

Martin told BBC Radio Norfolk: "It was at the back of a lot of people's minds and we made a big statement today.

"I think it due to our dominance - we were first to most balls and showed a great fighting spirit."

City boss Paul Lambert, who was Colchester manager in that game, now has a 12-1 aggregate in the games.

The pitch at Colchester was waterlogged in places, making conditions difficult for both sides.

I wanted it and a few of the other lads said I should but we have to be professional and Wes is the penalty taker. Looking back on it now perhaps I should have taken it

Chris Martin on City's missed penalty

Martin said: "The second one [goal] was horrible. I was trying to drag it through the mud, the swamp that is outside their box - luckily I pulled it through and slotted it into the corner.

"We like to play football but it wasn't possible on that pitch at all. We had to play a lot of long balls but we managed to adapt to it."

And Martin is rueing not taking the penalty that would have clinched his hat-trick after Wes Hoolahan hit the bar with his kick.

"I wanted it and a few of the other lads said I should but we have to be professional and Wes is the penalty taker," Martin said.

"Looking back on it now perhaps I should have taken it."
