Newcastle United keeper Harper makes reserve return

Steve Harper
Harper has been with Newcastle since July 1993

Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper made a return to action following a shoulder operation in the reserves' 7-1 win against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old played 65 minutes and saved a penalty in the fixture.

Harper had been out since suffering the injury in the Magpies' 1-0 win away at Everton in September.

The Easington-born player joined the club in July 1993 but has spent much of his career as back up to players such as Shaka Hislop and Shay Given.

With Fraser Forster on loan at Celtic until the new year, Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul has been promoted to number one in Harper's absence, with Swedish custodian Ole Soderberg in reserve.
