Newcastle United defender Danny Simpson has hailed the quality of midfielder Joey Barton ahead of his return to the side in Sunday's trip to West Brom.

Barton served the final match of his three-game suspension in last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea and should go straight into the Magpies squad.

"We all know about Joey's abilities on the ball," Simpson told BBC Newcastle.

"He can pick a pass, he can cross, and he works hard, I noticed it when I came into the team, he gives 110%."

Meanwhile, Sol Campbell's return to Premier League football last weekend alongside Steven Taylor was a boost for Newcastle manager Chris Hughton, with his first-choice centre-back pairing of Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson both suspended for the next two matches.

The experienced 37-year-old joined the club following his release from Arsenal during the summer.

"Sol is top class, he's played for so many years at the top level for England and for Arsenal in the Champions League," Simpson added.

"Just his experience and his presence is great to play with, obviously I watched him as a kid and it's great to play alongside one of the best centre-backs England has ever had."
