Newcastle United midfielder Kevin Nolan is adamant that a strong work ethic will be crucial to their hopes of success this season.

The Magpies hammered Aston Villa 6-0 at St James' Park on Sunday, and the 28-year-old captain has called on his team-mates to maintain that intensity.

"We've grafted hard, the shift the lads have put in helped us win 6-0," Nolan told BBC Newcastle.

"There's no let-ups in this league, we've got to be ready for every game."

Sunday's victory was a perfect response to the 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford the previous Monday, handing the Tynesiders their first three top flight points of the season.

However despite such a positive result, Nolan is convinced the club needs to look forward, rather than dwell on good or bad results this campaign.

"It's a great result today but it's over with now," Nolan added.

"We've got three points on the board, but we're looking forward to Wednesday now and then to Saturday against Wolves.

"We've got to put this to the back of our minds like we did last weekend, take the positives out of it, look at the slip-ups, but we're delighted."

The Liverpool-born midfielder has been with Newcastle since joining on a £4m transfer from Bolton Wanderers in January 2009, and since that time has made 61 appearances, scoring 20 goals.
