Newcastle spirit best since Bobby Robson - Shola Ameobi

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi believes the spirit at the club is the best since Sir Bobby Robson was manager.

The 28-year-old scored Newcastle's first as they beat Nottingham Forest on Monday to edge closer to promotion.

Ameobi was a member of Robson's squad during his tenure at St James' Park from 1999-2004.

He told BBC Newcastle: "Since the Bobby Robson days I haven't felt this bond with players and coaching staff, there's a real togetherness."

The Magpies squad is bound to undergo changes once boss Chris Hughton begins planning for the Premier League but Ameobi insists they must remain united.

"We've got a fantastic bond here but, it's a different kettle of fish in the Premier League," he said.

"You have to believe. Whatever changes, it's up to us to stick together.

"When the second goal went in against Forest it was such a relief because we knew the game was over and we could really start enjoying it.

"It's such a great feeling to be in that dressing room."

For Ameobi, this season has been one of frustration after a foot injury kept him out of large parts of the campaign.

But having capped his return to the first team with the opener in the defeat of Forest, he is determined to play his part in confirming Newcastle's promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

"It's been frustrating, I've kept positive, working hard to get back and be part of it," Ameobi said.

"The lads have done extremely well this season and it's been frustrating not to be a part of it.

"To be able to be back now for the run in hopefully I can stay fit and help us secure promotion to the Premier League."
