Defender Mike Williamson impressed by Newcastle United

New Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson believes the club showed their promotion mettle in Wednesday's 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

The 26-year-old, who has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at St James' Park, made his debut in the win.

"The main thing is, performances good or bad, you grind out and get the win," he told BBC Newcastle.

"The test for a good team is to grind things out when your back's against the wall and come away with the points."

Williamson's move comes just less than five months after a £2m transfer to Portsmouth from Watford, in which he failed to make a single first-team appearance.

He joined the Magpies on loan before kick-off so he could play and made the deal permanent on Thursday.

"If we can keep going and push us over the line then it will be a great achievement," he said.

"Everyone knows this is not where we belong and the unity we're showing is great to get the club back."
