Ameobi has scored four goals and been involved in all the matches this season
Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has revealed his delight at finally being 'accepted' by supporters following his early season form.
Ameobi, 27, is top scorer with four goals at St James' Park and the forward is revelling in the chance to make the most of his first-team opportunity.
"It's something that hasn't happened often over the years but I'm delighted," said Ameobi.
"I have finally got a chance to get a run in the team and prove I can score."
The Nigerian-born striker has spent almost a decade in the shadows of a string of big-name forwards, with limited cameos alongside players such as Alan Shearer, Craig Bellamy and expensive signings such as Obafemi Martins.
He grew up in the Walker district of Newcastle, and was a big Magpies supporter as a boy before joining the club's academy in 1995.
He then made his debut for the first-team against Chelsea in September 2000 and has since made 193 league appearances for the club, scoring 36 goals and has 20 England under-21 caps, netting seven times.
Newcastle under caretaker manager Chris Hughton take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Championship on Saturday.
