Magpies dismiss Shearer sack talk

Alan Shearer
Shearer criticised the club's structure last week

Newcastle have denied reports that Alan Shearer has been sacked from his role as the club's ambassador.

Reports suggested the former club captain was relieved of his post following his criticism of Kevin Keegan's managerial exit.

But Newcastle said the ex-England striker's contract as ambassador had expired at the end of last season.

And they added that the club continue to have an "excellent relationship with its all-time leading scorer".

A statement on the club's website added: "As a gesture of goodwill from the club, Alan was given a complimentary corporate box back in June for use at St James' Park.

"Any suggestions that Alan was stripped of his role because of recent events is completely inaccurate."

Shearer, who was at St James' Park on Saturday to watch the Magpies' 2-1 defeat to Hull, had last week described the structure at the club as "strange".

"I'd like to be a manager at some point in my career," Shearer, an icon among Newcastle fans after scoring 192 goals in 363 appearances for the club, told BBC Sport's Football Focus.

"But I want to manage - and control who comes in and out of the club."

It has been a turbulent time at St James' Park, with the statement on Shearer coming a day after owner Mike Ashley declared he was ready to sell the troubled club.

Keegan left his position as manager after just eight months on 4 September, claiming he had no control of transfer dealings.

And his departure prompted thousands of fans to protest against Ashley and the Newcastle board before, during and after Saturday's loss.

Those protests appear to have been the tipping point for Ashley, who has decided to put the club up for sale just 16 months after his 134.4m takeover.
