Magpies' Smith given two-game ban
Alan Smith
Smith joined Newcastle for 6m in the summer
Alan Smith has been handed a two-match ban after being sent-off in Newcastle's 6-0 defeat at Manchester United.

Smith was shown a straight red card in the final moments at Old Trafford after fiercely contesting United's sixth goal, scored by Carlos Tevez.

The 27-year-old will now sit out the FA Cup third round replay against Stoke and the league clash at home to Bolton.

Nicky Butt will also miss the next two matches after picking up his 10th booking of the season at Stoke.

Newcastle questioned whether the ball had crossed the line for Tevez's goal after the Argentine's shot came down off the bar.

But replays showed it was a goal and Smith, signed by former manager Sam Allardyce from Manchester United, was given his marching orders by referee Rob Styles.
