Midfielder Lee Clark has returned to Newcastle on a month-by-month basis after being released by Fulham.
The 32-year-old will primarily be used to help reserve team coach Tommy Craig with the younger players, but will also be available for the first team.
"When I was released by Fulham at the end of last season, never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd end up back here," Clark told Newcastle's website.
Clark made 240 appearance for the Magpies between 1989 and 1997.
The midfielder said he was delighted to help out on the coaching side.
"That is something that interests me bacuase I am keen to get into coaching. I've got my Uefa B licence, and I'm half-way through my A licence," said Clark.
"But I'm registered as a player, and who knows what may happen if there are injuries or suspensions?"
After leaving St James Park in 1997, Clark made a controversial switch to rivals Sunderland before joining Fulham in 1999.
