Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has apologised to the club's fans after the Magpies were dumped out of the Carling Cup 1-0 away at Wigan on Wednesday.
Some Newcastle fans called for Souness to resign and he said it was a woeful display against a second-string Latics.
"I'm angry and I'm disappointed for the fans, we have let down every person who travelled from Tyneside," said Souness.
"Their support was magnificent and they deserve better. I can understand their reaction and cannot complain about it."
Newcastle were almost at full strength for the tie and Souness admitted he was stunned to see his side outplayed from the start by Paul Jewell's team.
He added: "We didn't start well and if we're honest we could have been three, four or five down by half-time.
"I'm so disappointed, some of the players did not do themselves justice. I'm not just disappointed in defeat but it was the manner of the defeat.
"I can take nothing from the game. They were better than us."
Chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's official website they must put the performance behind them and concentrate on the league game against Aston Villa on Saturday.
"We are all in this together, the chairman, the board, the manager, the coaching staff, the players and the fans," said Shepherd.
"We are all Newcastle United and we have to stay united. We are all one team."
Newcastle have now lost their last three league and cup games without scoring a goal.
