Newcastle's Kieron Dyer could be ready to return to first-team action against Arsenal on 10 December.
The 26-year-old has spent five days at the Olympic Medical Institute to investigate the cause of his continued hamstring problem.
"Kieron's has been around here with no end in sight for him, so it's good to have a change of venue," Newcastle boss Graeme Souness told the club's website.
"I would think he could be in the running for the Arsenal game."
Dyer's recovery from repeated hamstring injuries has been complicated by the effects of a mystery illness.
But Newcastle are hoping that Dyer's stint in the Essex-based facility could help get to the root cause of the problem.
"Kieron's been down there for five days in the residential unit," said Souness.
"He is being constantly assessed. We did it just to make sure our staff are not missing anything."
The England midfielder has started just two matches in the Premiership this season, but recently said he thought the medical team had developed an answer.
"It's not just about my hamstrings, the condition is affecting the healing process for me," said Dyer.
"I've had some good news as we think we may have come up with a solution."
The midfielder has freqently been sidelined for long periods since his £6m move from Ipswich in 1999.
