Sir Bobby Robson has been handed the Barclaycard manager of the month award for January.

The Newcastle boss, who guided the Magpies to as high as second spot with four wins and a draw during January, has now won the award five times.

The Barclaycard awards panel includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

W 1-0 v Bolton
W 1-0 v Spurs
A spokesman for the panel said: "As the season progresses Sir Bobby Robson's side are looking more and more like potential champions.

"His guile, vast experience and ability to motivate have served him well. "

This is the first time Sir Bobby has won this award this season.

He won the award twice last season for performances in December and February.

Robson's managerial career began in Canada in 1967 with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

He was appointed Ipswich Town manager in 1969, winning the FA Cup in 1978 and the Uefa Cup in 1981.

Robson took the England job in 1981 and guided them to two World Cups where the eventual champions beat his team on both occasions.

He won the Dutch League twice with PSV Eindhoven and had a successful spell with FC Porto, before steering Barcelona to European Cup Winners Cup glory.
