Caldwell agrees Coventry loan
Gary Caldwell has won four Scotland caps
Newcastle's Scottish international defender Gary Caldwell has joined Coventry City on a season-long loan.
The promising 20-year-old will spend the campaign at Highfield Road after signing a new two-year contract with Newcastle last week. Allowing the centre-back to gain first-team experience at Coventry is an indication of the Magpies' confidence of landing £6m transfer target Titus Bramble from Ipswich. Bramble is wanted to provide competition to Nikos Dabizas and Andy O'Brien for the new Premiership campaign.
Caldwell is yet to break into the United first-team, but has won four full caps for Scotland. The Stirling-born defender impressed while on loan at Hibernian last term and was given his international debut against France in March. The Edinburgh side could not afford to make Caldwell a permanent signing but had hoped to bring him back to Easter Road on a temporary basis again. He is the second Newcastle player to go out on a season's loan, following midfielder Stuart Green, who is set to spend the year at Hull City. |
