Motherwell denied victory by bad call, says manager

Manager Craig Brown thinks Motherwell were denied victory over Rangers after controversially having a goal disallowed in their 1-1 draw.

Ross Forbes helped a netbound Stephen Craigan effort over the line only to see the strike disallowed for offside.

Brown said: "I've seen the TV evidence which would indicate the goal was okay.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the goal, which I think would have finished the game because we were very comfortable at that point."

Tom Hateley handed the Steelmen the lead with a wonderful free-kick before Kris Boyd rescued a point for the visitors with a tap-in.

Television footage suggested assistant referee John Gilmour made the wrong call when ruling out Forbes' effort, although Brown was reluctant to criticise the match official.

"I've always been an advocate of not criticising the officials so I won't do that - certainly not publicly.

"Officials have got jobs to do and they do them honestly.

"I was told that both Craigan and Forbes were onside but I don't want to be a moaner and a complainer.

"You get some decisions and some you don't. We didn't get that one but we might get one in the next game. We just have to accept it."

Rangers boss Walter Smith pointed out that his own side also had a strike chalked off at the same venue in November 2008, with that match also ending all square.

"They say the boy was onside," he said of Forbes' effort.

"But, if I can remember correctly we had one knocked off here before with Kris Boyd. Sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against you. I think we would have won that game if we'd got it so it balances out."

Boyd, making his first start since recovering from a double hernia operation, netted with just 10 minutes to go to rescue a point for a lacklustre Rangers side.

"We've got to fault ourselves because we gifted the goal to Rangers," said Brown. "It was indecision between the goalie John Ruddy and Mark Reynolds.

"That's our fault and we can't blame anyone but ourselves for conceding the goal. You don't give Kris Boyd a chance like that and expect to get away with it."
