McGhee ruling out Porter appeal

McGhee says his players are confident of beating St Mirren

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee says the club will not appeal against Chris Porter's red card in the Co-operative Insurance Cup defeat by Hamilton.

Porter was sent packing on Wednesday night for a challenge on David Elebert.

"We've looked at the DVD and it's inconclusive. Although Chris wouldn't try to injure anyone," McGhee said.

Well face St Mirren at Fir Park on Saturday looking to halt a four-match losing run and McGhee said: "We know, if we take our chances, we can win."

The Fir Park outfit have lost two league games against Celtic and Rangers, and suffered defeats against Nancy and Hamilton in the Uefa Cup and Co-op Insurance Cup respectively.

However, McGhee said morale in the squad had not been hit by the recent poor run of results.

"If you look at the four results, Celtic and Rangers were two of those. Most sides will lose to the Old Firm in this division," he said.

"We lost 1-0 away to Nancy, but the next day everyone was saying 'congratulations' and they saw it as a positive result.

"So it's not all bad. We wouldn't have lost against Hamilton if Porter hadn't been sent off. We don't feel as badly as the results suggest."

McGhee said everyone connected with the club was looking forward to the Uefa Cup first-round second leg against Nancy next week, with fans queuing outside Fir Park for tickets on Friday.

"You know, that's lifted all our spirits," he said. "It's got everyone excited and reminded us of the Nancy game. We can't wait to get the St Mirren game out of the way and look forward to that."
