Delay for O'Donnell stand tribute

Phil O'Donnell in action for Motherwell
O'Donnell died after playing for Motherwell in December

Motherwell have been forced to cancel the game planned to further honour late captain Phil O'Donnell on 2 August.

Spanish side Villarreal had agreed to play as the main stand at Fir Park was to be named after O'Donnell.

However, the La Liga side have pulled out and Motherwell have been unable to find a suitable replacement in time.

The Lanarkshire club now plan to postpone the official renaming until later in the season when a more appropriate opposition can be found.

O'Donnell, 35, collapsed and died of heart failure during a match against Dundee United on 29 December.

Celtic and Motherwell sides played a sell-out charity game in O'Donnell's memory at Celtic Park in May.
