Kilmarnock have signed Martyn Corrigan after his contract with Motherwell was terminated by mutual consent.

The 30-year-old agreed to join Killie more than a week ago but delayed his move after the sudden death of Well captain Phil O'Donnell last weekend.

"It's been a really difficult decision to make, especially in light of what has happened at the club," Corrigan told Motherwell's website.

"I love this club and the fans have been absolutely brilliant with me."

Full-back Corrigan has started only one game this season, a CIS Cup tie against Raith, after failing to impress manager Mark McGhee.

"From the day I arrived they have treated me with respect and supported me through good times and bad and I can't thank them enough for everything," he said of the fans.

O'Donnell collapsed during his team's Scottish Premier League game against Dundee United at Fir Park last Saturday and was pronounced dead a short time later.

His funeral took place in Hamilton on Friday.

"I must let it be known that the deal was tied up long before the tragic events and I have tried to delay it as long as possible purely out of respect for the O'Donnell family," Corrigan said.

"It's with a heavy heart that I leave, but I hope people understand that, at my age, I really need first-team football and I need to play every week.

"The club will always hold a special place in my heart."

The defender, who played 272 games for Motherwell after signing from Falkirk in 1999, would have had a testimonial in 2009 if he had seen out his contract.

But two serious knee injuries in the previous two years hindered his chances of impressing McGhee this summer and he spent a month on loan to Dundee earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Kilmarnock have released winger Robert Campbell.

The 21-year-old scored six goals during his loan spell this season with Third Division outfit Dumbarton.

But he played as a trialist for Queen of the South in their midweek game in Division One and is in talks about a permanent contract.
