Motherwell have secured the services of combative central midfielder Simon Mensing from St Johnstone.
Mensing has spent two seasons with St Johnstone
Assistant boss Scott Leitch put the deal in place before new manager Mark McGhee was revealed on Monday.
But McGhee insists he would have pulled the plug on the free transfer of the Englishman had he not approved.
"I've done my homework," McGhee said, "and I'm comfortable he's a player we should be signing, so he is my first signing."
Mensing, who can also play at full-back, spent two years with the Saints after signing from Clyde.
McGhee and Leitch paraded Mensing at a media gathering at Fir Park on Tuesday.
The midfielder was first courted by McGhee's predecessor Maurice Malpas before he quit and assistant manager Leitch arranged the deal on Saturday.

And McGhee said: "It is my first signing because having come in and taken the job I would have had the licence to say to the chairman 'I'm not signing anyone I've not seen or that I've not been party to'.
Mensing, who has agreed a two-year contract, had no doubts about moving to Lanarkshire despite the uncertainty over his new boss.
"I was speaking to Maurice before what happened and he made it clear he wanted to bring me to the club," the 24-year-old said.
"A few weeks later he left and Motherwell were more than quick to make it apparent that they still wanted me.
"Scott Leitch was appointed caretaker boss and again he made it clear he wanted me at the club, so I wouldn't say it was a hard choice.
"I spoke to the gaffer today and he said he is more than happy for me to come to the club.
"Obviously I'm going to have to prove myself, it's a step up."
Mensing was offered new terms by St Johnstone and manager Owen Coyle is sad to see him leave.
"I'm obviously disappointed but the bottom line is that he wants to play in the SPL and I can understand that," Coyle told the Perth club's website.
