Maurice Malpas admitted his Motherwell side were out of luck as Hearts ran out 2-0 winners at Fir Park.
"The luck was with Hearts, even though I thought we were the better team, but I can't fault our effort overall," said the manager.
"The SPL is all about getting results and, although we had a good display in the second half in particular, we lacked quality with the final pass.
"Now we have to visit Dundee United needing a win for a top-six place."
