Irons dismissed from Morton job

Morton have parted company with manager David Irons after a poor opening to the Division One campaign.

Irons and his assistant Derek Collins leave Cappielow with the Greenock side bottom of the table, having picked up just one win in six league games.

Chairman Douglas Rae said the club would not be rushed into naming a successor to the former Gretna boss.

The 48-year-old left ailing Gretna to join Morton in February 2008 and steered them to sixth place last term.

Irons told BBC Radio Scotland: "I'm not naive enough to think that results were going to be ignored. It's disappointing, but that's football, I suppose.

"I'll walk away with my head held high. I think we had the highest finish in 15 years last season.

"I know we didn't start the season particularly well but we had a similar start last year and got to within four games of going up.

"A season isn't won and lost in six games. It's a hard one to swallow."

Irons began his playing career 30 years ago at Queen of the South before spells at Ayr United, Clydebank, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, Annan and Gretna.

He took over from Rowan Alexander at Raydale Park as caretaker manager in March 2007 before being confirmed as the man to lead Gretna into the Scottish Premier League.

While admitting that there are some more high-profile managers currently out of work, Irons insists that he still has much to offer, whatever the role in football.

"I've put a lot into my coaching career. I've got the necessary qualifications to work at a decent level. Hopefully I'll be able to stay in the game in some capacity," he added.

"I gave it my best shot but ultimately the chairman decided it wasn't to be. I wish the fans all the best for the remainder of the season."
