Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy bemoans inconsistent form

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy hopes last Saturday's win over leaders Chesterfield will help revitalise their form in League Two.

But McIlroy admits losing to strugglers Macclesfield five days earlier shows how inconsistent their season has been.

"The first half at Macclesfield was probably one of the worst performances in my time at the club," he said.

"But then we get the result at Chesterfield and as a manager it blows you away."

The 56-year-old added: "I always knew we had a performance like that in us and we've just got to take confidence and push on now."

I've always had faith in this group of players and there's certainly better performances in them

Morecambe are currently 19th in League Two and host promotion-chasing Southend on Saturday.

A win could move them 10 points clear of the relegation zone, but after an erratic campaign so far McIlroy feels they have not had the rub of the green.

"From preparations in July right through to now it's not been what I've wanted and performances have been the same," he said.

"We've had inconsistent results and injuries and little niggles here and it feels like everything's been up against us.

"But I've always had faith in this group of players and there's certainly better performances in them."
