I considered quitting Morecambe - Sammy McIlroy

Morecambe manager Sammy McIlroy has admitted that he almost left the Globe Arena earlier this season.

McIlroy's team have struggled to build on last season's success of reaching the League Two play-offs and are just three places off the relegation zone.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: "I had a chat with the chairman a while ago and I was going to say 'that's enough'.

"We had a chat about things and decided to push on because I have a good chairman who does believe in me."

Morecambe go in to Saturday's match at Shrewsbury five points above the bottom two, following victory at Stockport on Monday.

"The players have given me everything. My staff are 100% behind me but the easiest thing in the world to do would have been to walk away," the former Northern Ireland boss said.

"Then you think to yourself 'hang on a minute. You've been here five years, the club has been brought on leaps and bounds. We're in a brand new stadium and we made the play-offs last season'.

"We've had a few bad results and I'm the worst loser in the world by the way and there's no doubt it does effect both yourself and your family."

McIlroy took over Morecambe in November 2005, initially as caretaker boss, and led them to promotion from the Conference via the play-offs in his first full season.
