MK Dons sign academy star

Milton Keynes Dons

MK Dons have handed a contract to 18-year-old academy youngster David King.

King was head apprentice and captain of the Under-18s during the second year of his apprenticeship, and has signed a one-year deal at the club.

He told the club website: "I'm delighted to be given this opportunity and am grateful to the manager for showing faith in my ability."

King, who can play in a number of roles, has been regularly involved with the first-team this season.

The youngster, who made his first-team debut in a League Cup tie at Cardiff City in August, added: "I've still got a lot to learn about the game and I will have to work extremely hard over the next year to develop, but, with the help of the experienced staff and the established professionals here, I'll be hoping to repay that faith.

As well as being a very talented young player, he has the traits of a leader and, with plenty of hard work, could have a big future at the club

"Mike Dove and all the academy staff have helped me come a long way as a player, now I've got to progress to the next level."

Dons chairman Pete Winkelman said: "David is a young player that has shown a lot of promise during his rise through the academy and we have great hope that he can progress further as a young professional.

"As well as being a very talented young player, he has the traits of a leader and, with plenty of hard work, could have a big future at the club."

The Bletchley-raised teenager joined the Dons academy in 2007 as a 16-year-old after succeeding on trial at the second attempt, and went on to sign as an apprentice in July 2007.
