Goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall has signed a one-year deal with Millwall after his contract was terminated at Southend.

The 32-year-old had been looking to play at a higher level than League Two and the financially troubled Shrimpers were keen to lower their wage bill.

He told the Millwall website: "It took a couple of days and sometimes I thought it wouldn't happen.

"It was an easy decision to come here. The club is massive and Millwall have always had brilliant support."

Mildenhall joined Southend from Yeovil in the summer of 2008, going on to play 89 games while at Roots Hall.

The former Swindon trainee has also featured for Grimsby, Oldham and Notts County, amassing 314 Football League appearances.

He also has one goal to his name, a free-kick for the Magpies in a 4-3 League Cup win against Mansfield in August 2001.

Mildenhall will be up against David Forde and John Sullivan in a battle to be Lions boss Kenny Jackett's number one goalkeeper, and he is relishing the challenge.

"The size of the club means we should set our sights high and try and win promotion every year," he added.

"The set-up here and the momentum from last year's success will help us achieve great things and I hope to be part of that for many years to come."

He leaves Southend five days after right-back Simon Francis was released by the Shrimpers to free up wages for new players.
