Middlesbrough have finally completed the 8m signing of Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu.

The 26-year-old has agreed a five-year deal with Boro after passing a medical and goes straight into the squad for Saturday's Premiership trip to Charlton.

Boro, who are yet to keep a clean sheet in 11 games so far this season, had been trailing the former West Brom player for several months.

Ehiogu was delighted to have finally secured his move following an extended period of uncertainty after his differences with Villa boss John Gregory came to a head.

Nightmare

He is relishing the chance to return to first-team football and challenge for an international recall, but admits that his last few weeks in the midlands were a nightmare.

"It's fair to say probably that it's the lowest I've ever been," he said.

"I felt as though I was getting a bit stale at Aston Villa. I felt I needed a fresh start and a change, and I didn't get on too well with the manager, so I'm just glad that everything is sorted out now.

"I'm very happy. It's taken a while to sort out, but I'm looking forward to playing tomorrow. I'm obviously still looking to challenge for things, and the gaffer is of the same opinion.

"I have to feel that I can improve and kick-start something to get myself back into the England squad."
