Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jason Steele has signed a new contract tieing him to the Riverside until the summer of 2015.

Steele, 20, who has established himself as first-choice keeper this season, also made his England Under-21 debut against Germany in November.

"I'm delighted to have signed," said Steele, "so I can now concentrate on helping us get out of the situation we find ourselves in.

"I told the manager that this is where I want to be and where I want to play."

Steele has been an ever-present for the Teessiders since coming in for his Boro debut to replace Danny Coyne between the posts for the 2-1 Carling Cup win at Chesterfield on 10 August.

But the club's poor run of form since then has seen them drop to 21st in the Championship table.

"Obviously it's not nice when we're losing games but it's still an honour to play for Middlesbrough and I want that to continue," said Steele.

"Playing in the first team is what I aspired to when I first came into the club at 12 years old," said Newton Aycliffe-born Steele.

"I've achieved that dream of playing for the first team.

"Hopefully I can continue that dream and help the club to push on."

Boyhood Boro fan Steele, who joined the club's Academy while still at school, spent time on loan at Northampton last season.

He made his professional debut in February, enjoying four clean sheets in 13 appearances for the Cobblers - and Saturday's against promotion-chasing Cardiff was his fourth (and probably most satisfying) for Boro.
