Tony Mowbray the man for Middlesbrough - Bruce Rioch

Former Middlesbrough manager Bruce Rioch believes Tony Mowbray is the man to stabilise the club following Gordon Strachan's resignation on Monday.

Mowbray is out of work since his nine-month reign at Celtic ended in his dismissal in March.

But Rioch has called on chairman Steve Gibson to install the former Boro defender at the Riverside.

"Tony Mowbray is a fantastic man," he told BBC Tees. "He would be a good person to have in charge of a club."

Mowbray was captain under Rioch at Ayresome Park between 1986 and 1990, a period in which the club gained successive promotions having previously been on the verge of liquidation.

Indeed, Rioch once said of Mowbray: "If I had to fly to the moon I'd take Tony Mowbray, my captain, with me. He's a magnificent man."

And Rioch now wants to see the 46-year-old return to Teesside as manager.

"He's done a great job in his management career so far, especially at West Brom," he said.

"I think Celtic was a difficult job for him with the culture and the environment, despite the fact he'd been there as a player.

He's got good, safe hands and obviously the connection with Middlesbrough goes back to 1986

"But what you learn from that is you come out of those difficult scenarios and become a better manager for it.

"His performance down in the south was fantastic.

"So long as he's not been shell shocked too great by the disappointment of being fired at Celtic, and I'm sure he hasn't, he would be a good person to have in charge of a football club.

"He's got good, safe hands and obviously the connection with Middlesbrough goes back to 1986."
