Middlesbrough have signed striker Caleb Folan on loan from Premier League side Hull City for three months.

The 26-year-old joins up with the Teessiders ahead of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with West Brom.

Folan has made four appearances for the Tigers in the Premier League this season but was allowed to leave the club for regular first-team action.

Hull paid £1m to Wigan for Folan in August 2007, eight months after he joined the Latics from Chesterfield.

Folan is the second England-born Republic of Ireland player to join the club on loan this week, following the arrival of defender Sean St Ledger from Preston on Tuesday.

Folan began his career with home-town club Leeds United in 2001 as a trainee but following loan spells at Rushden and Hull City, eventually moved to Chesterfield on a free-transfer in February 2003.

His form at Saltergate, which included a winner against West Ham in the League Cup, prompted Wigan to spend £500,000 to bring him into the Premier League, but he swiftly moved onto Hull and played a part in their promotion to the top flight in May 2008.

His international career began in October 2008, making his debut against Cyprus as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier under boss Giovanni Trapattoni.
