Southgate targets loan signings

Southgate saw three key players depart during the transfer window

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has declared his interest in adding extra numbers to his squad during the Football League's loan window.

Southgate saw three big-name players in Robert Huth, Tuncay and Afonso Alves depart during the transfer window and is now keen to bolster his ranks.

"We are still very actively trying to strengthen the squad with loans," he told BBC Tees.

"I only want to bring in the right types, we're active in that."

Meanwhile, the defeat by Bristol City aside, Southgate remains pleased with the club's recent form with the club fourth in the Championship, three points behind leaders Newcastle.

And Southgate believes the club is exactly where he expected them to be at this stage.

He said: "We felt that over the five games we've started well, we were annoyed to lose the game at Bristol and we felt we should have got a point there.

"Two points per game over the last ten years would win us the league, so the fact there are other teams level and above us shows how competitive the division is at the moment.

"I can't be too critical of what we've done, we're on target defensively, we could maybe have scored a few more goals but points-wise we're on target for what we want to achieve."
