Middlesbrough sign keeper Coyne

Coyne has a wealth of Premier League and Championship experience

Middlesbrough have signed Wales international goalkeeper Danny Coyne from League One side Tranmere Rovers on a two-year deal.

Coyne, 35, has a wealth of experience and boss Gareth Southgate is hoping the former Leicester stopper can challenge Brad Jones for the first-team jersey.

"Danny is an excellent goalkeeper," Southgate told BBC Tees.

"He has played at the highest level with Wales and has great experience. He is the right type of character."

Coyne began his career with Tranmere before joining Grimsby in 1999 where he made more than 200 appearances, many in the Championship.

His form at Blundell Park earned him a move to Premier League Leicester in 2003, where he played just five games, and following three seasons with Burnley, the Welshman returned to Tranmere in July 2007.

Coyne, who will train with his new team-mates on Monday on their first day back after the summer break, said he was determined to help the Teessiders return to the Premier League.

"Leaving Tranmere was a hard decision but joining Middlesbrough was a no-brainer for me. I came up and met the manager and goalkeeper coach Stephen Pears, saw the training facilities and made my mind up," he said.

"Gareth has told he wants us to win the Championship and get the club back in the Premier League where we belong.

"I've played most of my career in this division so I know it very well and I think we've got every chance of going up.

"I feel as fit as I've ever been so I'm coming here to push Brad for a first team place and do all I can to contribute towards us winning promotion."
