Middlesbrough midfielder Gaizka Mendieta could still leave the Riverside by the end of the season.
Mendieta has struggled with injury in the last two seasons
Mendieta, 32, failed to seal a move away during the transfer window but could be heading to America, according to Boro boss Gareth Southgate.
Southgate told the club's website: "Whether he stays for the remainder of the season remains to be seen.
"Something's happening in the USA. I don't know whether he will be able to do something during the season."
As the transfer window is now closed, Middlesbrough may be forced to release the former Valencia player to push a deal through.
Mendieta joined Boro on an initial loan deal in 2003 before he finalised his move in July of the following year.
The former Spain international, however, has struggled with injury in the last year and has made just eight appearances for Boro this season.
