Boro sign Vidmar
Tony Vidmar
Tony Vidmar was out of contract
Middlesbrough have signed Australian international defender Tony Vidmar.

Despite the closure of the transfer window on 31 August, Vidmar is eligible to play for the Riverside club as he was signed as an out-of-contract player.

He will only be able to turn out for Steve McClaren's side against Sunderland on Wednesday if Middlesbrough get the necessary Fifa clearance in time.

"We are delighted to bring Tony on board because when Gianluca Festa left the club we were a bit short in cover at the back," said Boro boss Steve McClaren.

"And with this window, which means you can't sign anyone until January, we didn't want to leave ourselves short."

Vidmar, 33, left Rangers in July and has also played for Dutch team NAC Breda.
