Southgate to inspire Boro
McClaren is aiming to prove himself as a manager
BBC Sport Online argues that the acquisition of Gareth Southgate will prevent Boro becoming involved in another relegation scrap.
Middlesbrough are led into the season by a new manager, Steve McClaren, and four new signings, including England defender Gareth Southgate. McClaren left his post as Alex Ferguson's number two at Manchester United to take over as Boro boss. And he has had a busy summer assessing the ability of the club's players and adding some new faces to the squad. McClaren quickly recognised the need for a central defender, and identified Southgate as the man to fulfil the role. "Every team needs a platform and the platform starts with the back four and the goalkeeper," said McClaren.
Southgate will team up with his former Aston Villa team-mate Ugo Ehiogu. The partnership should go some way to ensuring the club is not involved in a repeat of last season's relegation scrap. In addition to his ability on the field Southgate is also seen as an ideal role model for the club's younger players. McClaren remembers from his time with England how well Southgate integrates with the rest of the team. He said: "I just noticed Gareth at every meal time going to a different table and mixing with the lads very well and always ending up with a different player every session. "When I came here, I wanted people who the younger players could look up to and aspire to, and I believe Gareth is exactly that type of person." McClaren has also raided his former club to bring Jonathan Greening and Mark Wilson to Boro. The pair are highly rated, but found it difficult to break into the first-team at Old Trafford. The move is an excellent opportunity for both men to fulfil their potential and perhaps help Boro finish high enough in the table to qualify for Europe.
