Garner proud to captain Mansfield

Mansfield Town

Mansfield Town defender Scott Garner says he was proud to captain the club for the first time this week.

The 19-year-old led the Stags out for the win over Altrincham at Field Mill.

Garner told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It was a massive moment for me. As soon as he (manager David Holdsworth) told me, I was buzzing.

"You feel different responsibilities. You shouldn't really, but when you get the armband you feel more responsible and you're organising people."

Garner has impressed since joining Mansfield in January following a loan spell at Holdsworth's former club Ilkeston.

He partnered 17-year-old debutant Tom Naylor in the centre of defence on Tuesday and the pair helped keep a clean sheet.

Garner said: "I suppose I played the role Adie Moses has been playing while I've been here. We were a good partnership, and could be one for the future maybe."
