Mansfield unveil Curle
Keith Curle is the new Mansfield manager
Keith Curle takes the reins at Field Mill
Mansfield Town have confirmed the appointment of former England defender Keith Curle as their new player-manager.

Ex-Manchester City star Curle will take over from Stuart Watkiss, who was sacked along with his assistant Neil Richardson on Monday.

Curle's experience should help a defence which has already leaked more than 50 goals this season.

The Stags are currently bottom of the Second Division and suffered their 13th league defeat of the season at Port Vale on Saturday.

"Obviously, looking at the goals against column, it's easy for me to see where the problems lie," Curle told Mansfield Today.

"At my first meeting with the players I have told them I don`t have a magic wand.

"All I can do is give them guidance, belief and show them physically by going out there and doing it myself."

Stags chairman Keith Haslam believes Curle`s appointment will prove a turning point.

He said: "I am fed up of being told how good we are and then losing ground on clubs we feel we are as good as.

"Keith Curle will come in with fresh views and that is going to stimulate our players.

"I am looking forward to the task ahead."

Watkiss, a former Mansfield player, was promoted to the manager's position at Field Mill after Bill Dearden left to take over as boss at Notts County in January.

He initially built on the successful foundations laid by Dearden and guided Mansfield to promotion from Division Three.

But the Stags have struggled to compete in the higher league.

Watkiss and Richardson were relieved of their duties at a meeting with Mansfield chairman Keith Haslam on Monday morning.
