Gary Neville extends Manchester United contract

Manchester United club captain Gary Neville has signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford.

The 35-year-old missed almost 18 months of football after a serious ankle ligament injury in March 2007.

But he has made 27 appearances for the Premier League champions this season and nearly 600 appearances in total since making his debut in 1992.

The right-back joins fellow veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in committing to another season at United.

Since signing a contract extension until June 2010 in February 2009, Neville has proved his fitness and form and has been mentioned as a possible candidate for a place in England's World Cup squad.

The emergence of 19-year-old Rafael has seen Neville alternate right-back duties with the Brazilian at Old Trafford this season.

But with his side chasing a fourth consecutive league title, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Neville's performances.

"He deserves it," said Ferguson. "His contribution has been fantastic.

"What Gary has achieved after being out of the game for 18 months, in his 30s, is astonishing."

The new contract will take Neville into his 19th season at the club after coming up through the famous youth team that also produced David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Scholes.

"You could keep a player with great experience and not play him," Ferguson told the club website.

"I don't think Gary would enjoy that, I don't think Scholes, Giggs or van der Sar would either. They want to play, nobody more than Gary.

"Neville, Giggs and Scholes are taking their coaching badges, which I am delighted about.

"They all have futures as coaches, but we will assess what part they can play at Manchester United when the time comes.

"You can't dismiss lightly their careers here. Their experience could be invaluable to the future of young players at this club."
