On 6th February 1958, Flight 609 ZU carrying the Manchester United team, back-room staff, journalists and members of the public, stopped at Munich for refuelling.
It had been snowing in the area and after the stop the plane twice failed to take off as a build-up of slush towards the end of the runway caused it to decelerate.
On the third take-off attempt the plane once again lost speed, could not get airborne and this time careered off the end of the runway at 157 mph. A wing hit a house and the plane then hit another building causing it to crash and catch fire.
Seven of Manchester United's players died immediately.
