Rooney waiting on scan
Wayne Rooney
Manchester United's new signing Wayne Rooney had a scan on Thursday to determine when he will make his debut.

England striker Rooney, who on Tuesday moved from Everton to United in a £27m deal, picked up a foot injury against Portugal at Euro 2004 this summer.

A target for the 18-year-old may be the September 20 match against Liverpool.

But boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We do not know exactly when Wayne will be available. When he has had his scan it will be much clearer."

Rooney, who has signed a six-year deal with United, is unlikely to be fit for the trip to Bolton on 11 September.

However, Ferguson added: "He is not far away. We think it is only a matter of two or three weeks because he has been doing some running and trained on Wednesday morning but we will be better placed to assess it on Thursday."

I cannot wait to get out there and play my first game

Rooney's Old Trafford striker partner will be Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy - himself a month away from full fitness following a hernia operation.

Van Nistelrooy has scored 110 goals in three seasons at Old Trafford and Rooney admitted that the Dutch star's form was one of the reasons he decided to leave his boyhood club Everton.

"Ruud is a top forward," stated Rooney. "You only have to look at his goalscoring record to look at that.

"Any player in the world would want to play alongside him. I cannot wait to get out there and play my first game."

Meanwhile, it is understood that Rooney's wages will be dependent on the club's success.

The 18-year-old will earn about £50,000 a week at United but only if the club continue to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

There are other incentives in Rooney's contract which will boost his earnings, for example if United win the Barclays Premiership or the Champions League.

Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze both signed similar performance-related contracts when they joined the club this summer.

Chief executive David Gill said: "We have to make sure that some of the money is tied to success."
