Man Utd land Youth Cup

Manchester United 1-1 Middlesbrough
(Man Utd win 3-1 on aggregate)

Manchester United were crowned FA Youth Cup champions for a record ninth time at Old Trafford on Friday.

With Sir Alex Ferguson and the majority of United's first-team squad in the stands, Brian McClair's youngsters were held to a draw by Middlesbrough on the night.

But they prevailed on aggregate following a 2-0 away win in the first leg.

The home side took the lead through Eddie Johnson on 15 minutes and, despite Gary Liddle's equaliser 12 minutes from time, never looked like throwing away their lead.

United created a succession of chances, with skipper David Jones and striker Sylvan Blake a constant threat.

England Youth international Johnson opened the scoring, firing a shot into the top corner which gave Ross Turnbull in the Boro net no chance.

Having started the game needing to score twice to force extra-time, it virtually ended any hope Boro might have had and from that moment, United were in full control.

But the Teessiders put up a brave fight and Boro were rewarded for their efforts when Liddle found the net with an excellent diving header from Andrew Davies' cross on 78 minutes.

Luke Steele saved late on as Middlesbrough threatened to steal the victory, but United held on to collect the trophy for the first time since 1995.
