Ferguson demands better
Ferguson is confident of a successful season
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged his players to prove they still have the desire to succeed in the Premiership.

United finished third in last season's top flight - their lowest ever Premiership finish.

You have to say the only thing to worry about, with the ability we have here, is desire
Sir Alex Ferguson
Domestic rivals Arsenal won the Premiership and the FA Cup, while United were knocked out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage by Bayer Leverkusen.

And Ferguson is determined that his team will atone for their trophyless campaign by winning honours next term.

"You have to say the only thing to worry about, with the ability we have here, is desire," Ferguson told the Mirror newspaper.

"Are the players hungry enough? Do they have that desire?

"I'm confident we will see that question positively answered next season."

The Old Trafford boss added: "The disappointment of winning nothing will have a positive effect.

"This has been the first time in 10 years we have finished outside the top two.

"Maybe it'll be the kick up the backside we needed because I'm certainly not accepting it.

Veron denial

Meanwhile, chief executive Peter Kenyon has denied reports that Juan Sebastian Veron wants to leave Old Trafford.

Kenyon was quoted on an Italian website as saying that Argentine Veron wants to leave United but that no suitable offers have been received for him.

The chief executive was also quoted as saying that the club have abandoned their pursuit of Juventus' French defender Lilian Thuram and that United were on course to sign Rio Ferdinand from Leeds.

But the United supremo told the club's official website: "The quotes are total fiction.

"I haven't spoken to anyone in Italy and I don't know where the quotes have come from."

Veron joined United from Lazio last summer for a British record transfer fee of £28m.

But he had a disappointing first season in the Premiership and has been continually linked with a return to the Italy.
