The significant seven?
![]() The all-important number at the bottom of Veron's shirt
It was supposed to be a routine arrival for Juan Sebastian Veron.
Instead, his appearance set tongues wagging over whether David Beckham is on his way out of Old Trafford. Everyone knew he was coming. The medical was a formality. The ink was almost dry on the cheques. So why the flapping amongst Manchester United fans when their new Argentine superstar midfielder finally arrived in Manchester?
The number seven. Not exactly a magnificent one, but arguably significant. So will Veron be taking the shirt off David Beckham's back next season? Or is the England captain's Old Trafford number up for good? Fans were suddenly whispering rumours that Veron's arrival wasn't merely to strengthen the midfield, but replace its most flamboyant incumbent. Some famous names have proudly worn the number seven shirt at United. At Sir Alex Ferguson's testimonial match, Beckham, Bryan Robson and Eric Cantona all played in number seven shirts at the same time. But then again, is this all an act of infamous Ferguson mischief? Sir Alex has promised to leave Old Trafford in style this season. Whatever the significance of Veron's choice of shirt, that certainly looks like being the case.
