Attilio Lombardo joins Manchester City coaching staff

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has added former Sampdoria team-mate Attilio Lombardo to his coaching staff.

Lombardo, 44, links up with another former Sampdoria man, David Platt, who joined City as a coach earlier in July.

Lombardo is no stranger to the Premier League, having had a spell as player-manager of Crystal Palace in 1998.

"It's great he has joined. He was a top-class player and will bring lots of experience and a winning mentality," Mancini told City's website.

"I know he is excited at being with Manchester City and I know he loves the English game from his time in London."

Lombardo completes the coaching set-up at Eastlands following the arrival of former England midfielder Platt.

The former Italy international, who will also scout opposition teams, will work in a backroom team that also includes former Blues player Brian Kidd as Mancini's assistant.

Lombardo played the bulk of his career at Sampdoria where he made more than 200 starts for the club - many of them alongside Mancini.

Since retiring as a player, he has worked with young players at Sampdoria and as coach of Swiss side FC Chiasso, as well as his brief spell at Selhurst Park with Palace.
