Manchester City have completed the signing of Espanyol winger Albert Riera on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move.
Riera joined Espanyol in the summer
The 23-year-old has struggled to establish himself at Espanyol since arriving from Bordeaux last summer.
"We saw the opportunity when things hadn't worked out there to bring him in," said City boss Stuart Pearce.
"He's on loan until the summer and if things work out well for him here we might well keep him on beyond that."
Riera, who has been given the number 19 shirt, could go straight into City's squad for Saturday's FA Cup game against Scunthorpe if the club receive international clearance.
He has started just four games this season, three in the Uefa Cup.
"Albert's a naturally left-sided player and gives a natural balance on that side" added Pearce.
"It's another new face and he's of a good age at 23. We're hoping he'll do well for us.
"When you get players on-loan you don't really want to give them a month or two to settle in. Only his ability will dictate that and how quickly and well he settles in.
"Albert's got a grasp of the English language, but we'll try pick up on that as much as possible and filtering him into the side."
Earlier in the week, Espanyol director Cristobal Parralo said the Premiership side have an option to buy Riera for £3.5m.
