Manchester City are closing in on a deal for Bordeaux striker Pauletta.

City boss Kevin Keegan completed the signing of Bordeaux defender David Sommeil on Thursday for 3.5m.

And he is now targeting Portuguese marksman Pauletta, after his transfer bid for Leeds' Robbie Fowler fell through last week.

Keegan, who is believed to be ready to offer 4m for Pauletta, is hoping his close friend Sommeil will be able to talk him into a move to Maine Road.

And, while dismissing City's first approach for the player, Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud did not rule out a deal.

"They have expressed an interest in Pauleta but, initially, we are not interested," Triaud said, suggesting the player could be for sale in the right circumstances.

Pauletta was one of the few Portugese players to make a mark during the 2002 World Cup, grabbing a hat-trick against Poland.

He is also the top scorer in the French league this season, and was named player of the year last term.
