Wetherall bound for Maine Road

Manchester City are close to signing Bradford defender David Wetherall for more than 1m.

The 30-year-old is in talks with the Maine Road club after a move to Premiership side Southampton fell through earlier this week.

Wetherall joined Bradford from Leeds for 1.4m in June 1999.

He missed two large spells of last season with a groin injury and he has been hit by minor problems again this term.

Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan wants to strengthen a defence which has leaked 26 goals in 17 games.

And Bantams chairman Geoffrey Richmond confirmed: "The manager has given Manchester City permission to talk to the player."
