Luton close in on Basham signing

Luton are hoping to be able to shortly confirm the signing of former Exeter City striker Steve Basham.

The 31-year-old played in the Hatters friendly at Hampton and Richmond on Saturday.

Manager Mick Harford told BBC Three Counties Radio: "He hasn't played a lot of football, that was his first 45 minutes in pre-season.

"His goalscoring record at this level is very good and hopefully he will score a few for us this season."

Harford added: "He will be mobile and a good foil for (Tom) Craddock and (Liam) Hatch, he has pace and works the channels."

Basham has played non-league football for both Oxford and Exeter and had spells at Preston, Wrexham and Southampton as well.

Luton lost their last pre-season game at Hampton and Richmond to the only goal of the game from Lawrence Yaku.

The Hatters missed two first half penalties and that annoyed boss Harford.

"It all stems back to when we had a penalty and Tommy took it upon himself to try and chip the goalkeeper," he said. "It all started from that in my opinion.

"Looking at the game, it should have been 5-0 or 6-0 at half-time, but in any football match you can't take liberties.

"At the end of the day we were by far the better team in terms of football and the way we tried to play, but it's the last pre-season friendly and I'm obviously disappointed with the result. It would just be nice to finish the pre-season on a bit of a high."

Luton travel to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
