Injured Underwood leaves Hatters

Luton Town midfielder Paul Underwood has decided to leave the League Two club after failing to recover from a long-term knee injury.

The 35-year-old suffered the problem in 2006 and has not played a game since the 2006/07 pre-season.

Underwood's contract with Luton was due to expire at the end of the season but he has left now as he would not be fit before the end of the campaign.

He joined the Hatters from Rushden in 2004, making 72 appearances.

Luton director Antony Brown told the club website: "It's horrible when a player suffers such a long-term injury.

"It is hugely demoralising for the player concerned when they are trying to regain fitness but are separate from the rest of the squad and can't contribute on the pitch.

"I know the lads wish Paul the very best and hope that he makes a full recovery and gets a chance of football for a couple more seasons."
